‘Earth Hour’ Is as Empty as It Is Dark

Capitalism has done more good than environmentalism could ever dream.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) — years ago WWF stood for World Wrestling Federation, but that’s another story — annually organizes “Earth Hour.” During that one hour of caring about the planet, people are encouraged to turn off their lights and “[s]witch on your social power to shine a light on climate action.” This year’s Earth Hour takes place Saturday, March 19, at 8:30 p.m. local time.

Naturally, the irony is lost on these ecofascists that living in darkness is a feature of the third world. All you need to do is view a night-time map and compare North Korea with its neighbors. Another example is Venezuela, which, according to Investor’s Business Daily, “is shutting down its electricity for a week in hopes of averting an energy crisis caused by its economic policies.”

Many conservatives have a better idea: celebrate capitalism for having lifted billions out of poverty. As IBD puts it, “There are plenty of human achievements under capitalism that we can celebrate: medical innovation and greater life expectancy; modern transportation; light, clean water, warmth and cool at a single touch; improved working conditions; superior hygiene; less poverty; a cleaner environment; luxury items available at affordable prices; abundant food and safe food storage; and opportunities and equality never before known in history, to name a few.”

Meanwhile, the city of Östersund, Sweden, has more important things to worry about than an hour of symbolism. The city has been so overwhelmed with Muslim migrants and the ensuing epidemic of sexual assaults and other violence that residents are reportedly afraid of the dark. So Earth Hour has been canceled there to protect people. But by all means, climate alarmists are welcome to sit in the dark and feel good about “making a difference.”
