Last week, I wrote in this column that Dr. Ben Carson, a leading Republican candidate for the presidency, was an "American hero." I pronounced him thus even as the roof was falling in on his candidacy. Or was it? His numbers in the polls have held up. As the hullabaloo grew in the media, millions of dollars poured into his campaign from supporters all over the country. A week after it all began, the Carson campaign still appears formidable. Is his campaign really in trouble or has the crafty neurosurgeon-turned-presidential-candidate hit upon yet another tactic to win the election? Is he turning the maniacal nitpicking of the press to his political advantage?

The Politico headline was blunt: "Ben Carson Admits Fabricating West Point Scholarship." Except Carson made no such admission. He acknowledged never applying to West Point. But as a top ROTC student in Detroit, there's little question that had he wanted to go to West Point, he could've gotten in. Technically, West Point offers appointments, and the full tuition is paid for by taxpayers. But even West Point's own website uses the word "scholarship." In any case, Carson went to Yale, and, as such, could likely have gone to any school in the country.

Big media has zeroed in on Carson because he is the new frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination. They're also targeting him because he is a man of faith and, let's be honest, because he is a black conservative. Recent polling shows Carson would get 20 percent of the African American vote against Hillary Clinton, a result that would devastate her election chances and destroy the whole left wing narrative about race.

Dr. Ben Carson's whole life has been very unusual, so perhaps we should not be surprised to see the latest twist — the media going ballistic over discrepancies in a few things he said. Years ago, when I was writing some autobiographical sketches, I dug up old letters, to check out things that I remembered — and was surprised more than once to discover that my memory was not always exactly the same as the way things had happened and were recorded at the time.

Dr. Ben Carson is an American hero. He is also a frontrunner in the Republican race for the White House. What is more he is black, God-fearing, law-abiding and a distinguished neurosurgeon. Weighing the most important things in life, he is everything you would want in an American man. Yet his road in life has not been without challenges. As a young boy growing up in Detroit, he now says he had temper-management difficulties — curiously, this admission caused laughter among middle-class liberal pundits.

"I just don't get it," Scarborough said more than once.

Americans are now in a historically long period of distrust and dissatisfaction regarding their government and their country. This goes a long way in explaining why political outsiders are dominating the polls in the Republican presidential race. Even quality conservative candidates such as Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz lag far behind Donald Trump and Ben Carson. They are tainted by the mere fact that they are politicians.

Dr. Ben Carson, now second in most polls for the Republican presidential nomination, naturally finds himself under attack by threatened lefties. GQ published an anti-Carson article with the headline "F—k Ben Carson," except it spelled out the f-word. Comic actor Seth Rogen tweeted "F—k you" to Carson. And a Daily Beast column accused him of anti-Semitism. The columnist cited Godwin's law, which states that debate gets shut down the minute one invokes Nazi Germany to make a point.

We've been waiting for the media attacks on Ben Carson to begin. To this point he'd been (relatively) untouched: He wasn't viewed as a credible threat. But his numbers aren't receding. They're growing. So he's now in the crosshairs. The "news" networks have spent several days manufacturing outrage over Carson, saying that if he were in a mass-shooting situation, he would want to fight back. "I would not just stand there and let him shoot me."
