Kamala’s Lone Consistent Policy Position

Harris’s hard-left instincts have once again put the Senate filibuster in her crosshairs.

Democrats keep saying they love our sacred democracy. Indeed, they often say Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans are a threat to our democracy.

Putting aside the fact that we live in a republic, not a democracy, the reality is that Democrats would tear down every pillar of our political system in order to preserve their hold on power. Supreme Court decisions not going their way? Pack the court. Electoral College giving a voice to the heartland of America? Push for a national popular vote. Can’t field candidates who can appeal to voters and win elections outright? Implement rotten ranked-choice voting.

Now, Kamala Harris and the Democrats are promising to end the Senate filibuster, a procedure that ensures the majority cannot run roughshod over the minority. And, of course, it’s only the beginning. Once Democrats steamroll one pillar of our constitutional system, there’s no stopping them. It’s akin to political terrorism. Give them what they want, or they’ll burn it all down.

“Once Democrats have eliminated the filibuster for one piece of legislation,” writes National Review’s Jim Geraghty, “it’s hard to see why progressive activist groups would accept keeping it in place for anything else. Left-wing organizations aren’t really known for their patience, respect for precedent and established procedure, and serene acceptance of legislative obstacles.”

It’s not the first time the Left has tried to end the filibuster, the Senate’s long-honored 60-vote procedural threshold. This time around, abortion is the driver. According to Just the News, “After the Dobbs v. Jackson decision in 2022 eliminated the constitutional right to an abortion, some Democrats called for abolishing the filibuster to let the Democratic-led Senate pass a bill to reinstate abortion access for all states.”

Fortunately, Senators Krysten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia realized ending the filibuster for immediate political gratification would have negative consequences down the road for Democrats, as Republicans would be able to push their agenda through with a simple majority vote when they’re in power.

As The Hill reports: “Some Democratic senators say that while they support the goal of passing legislation to protect abortion rights, they’re leery of blowing a hole in the filibuster rule that Republicans warn would be used to pass conservative priorities, such as a national voter ID law, through the Senate with only simple majorities.”

When it comes to their quest for power, Democrats never give up. Knowing that both Sinema and Manchin are retiring at the end of this term, Kamala Harris and her Democrat comrades are more determined than ever. In an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio, Harris said eliminating the filibuster would “get us to the point where 51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do.”

But it’s not just about abortion. As a candidate for president and as a senator, Harris called for ending the filibuster in 2019 to force-feed the Green New Deal on Americans. Abolishing the filibuster seems to be the only clearly consistent position Harris has ever held.

Manchin and Sinema, though, aren’t mincing words. Sinema’s criticism of Harris focused on the political reality. “To state the supremely obvious,” she posted, “eliminating the filibuster to codify Roe v Wade also enables a future Congress to ban all abortion nationwide. What an absolutely terrible, shortsighted idea.”

Manchin, meanwhile, was more statesmanlike than the hack politicians who surround him in the Democrat Party. Calling the filibuster “the Holy Grail of Democracy,” he explained, “I have been consistent on the importance of protecting the 60-vote threshold, which we call the filibuster, since I arrived at the United States Senate. This threshold stabilizes our democracy, promotes bipartisan cooperation, and protects our nation from partisan whiplash and dysfunction.”

Back in 2022, the hard-left pressure group Common Cause complained that 17 of 18 “pro-democracy” bills pushed by Democrats were stopped by the Senate filibuster. That’s a good thing.

The Senate is designed to be the deliberative, cautionary body that tempers the immediate passions and interests of the House of Representatives and carefully considers the broader implications of a bill. The filibuster is thus a critical part of our system of checks and balances.

That process doesn’t work for Democrats, though, who think they’re on the cusp of a Marxist revolution. A Harris presidency would help them realize their dream of political power without obstacles, and that’s one more reason why our vote is so critical this November.
