Rethinking College Athletics: A Parent’s Perspective

The focus dishearteningly seems to have shifted. It’s time for a collective rethinking of what we want from these programs.

The landscape of college athletics has become increasingly troubling. As the parent of two Division 1 athletes involved in distinct programs, I feel compelled to share my insights. The more I engage with the world of collegiate sports, the more I question whether this pursuit is genuinely worthwhile. My core objective has always been to secure a debt-free education for my children — one that will provide lifelong benefits rather than fleeting advantages over just four years.

Many supporters of college sports remain blissfully unaware of the complexities lurking beneath the surface. If they truly understood the realities behind the scenes, I believe they would reconsider their enthusiasm for these programs. The ethical standards — or lack thereof — are astounding. Those in power can appear genuine, offering handshakes and assurances, only to later betray you and your child when it aligns with their interests. This behavior highlights a troubling culture in which the pursuit of financial gain overshadows any commitment to principles or values.

In my household, we prioritize the intrinsic values of sports. I have always taught my sons to appreciate athletics as more than just a means to an end; it is a vehicle for personal growth, teamwork, and passion. We deliberately steer clear of the allure of money. I worry that misguided financial incentives can lead young athletes down a treacherous path, one that ultimately undermines their character and well-being.

My father’s career provides a solid foundation for my beliefs. He spent 27 years as a vice president at a major bank and served as a pastor for 38 years. From him, I learned the critical importance of money and morals. He taught me that money is akin to a visitor — if you work hard and treat it with respect and integrity, it will reward you. But when you let greed guide your actions, you risk losing everything that truly matters.

As I watch my older sons navigate this challenging environment, I find myself increasingly concerned about their futures. The competitive atmosphere is intense, and the pressure to perform can overshadow the joys of the game. The focus seems to have shifted from fostering athletic talent and personal development to chasing financial incentives and status. This shift is disheartening, especially when I consider the lessons I want my children to learn through sports.

Athletics should ideally nurture resilience, discipline, and teamwork. Yet, in many cases, it appears that the system is more concerned with profit margins and broadcasting rights than the holistic development of young athletes. The culture of college sports often rewards those who prioritize short-term gain over long-term growth. This is not the legacy I want for my children.

I’m increasingly contemplating a shift away from this chaotic world of college athletics. Perhaps enrolling my younger sons in pickleball or another sport that emphasizes skill and enjoyment without the overwhelming pressures of elite competition would be a better option. I believe it’s crucial for them to engage in activities that promote their well-being rather than subjects them to a cutthroat environment.

As parents, we must advocate for meaningful change in college athletics. It’s essential to hold institutions accountable for their practices and to ensure that the primary focus remains on the student-athletes’ education and personal development. We should push for a system that values integrity, character, and a genuine love for the game over financial gain.

In conclusion, the current state of college athletics demands our attention and critical evaluation. It’s time for a collective rethinking of what we want from these programs. Let’s prioritize the educational and moral development of our young athletes and create an environment that fosters genuine passion for sports rather than one driven by greed. Only then can we ensure that the sacrifices made by these young individuals yield meaningful and lasting dividends.
