Leftmedia Now Worried About Inflation
JD Vance offers a remedial tutorial in Economics 101.
Suddenly, now that Donald Trump is in the White House, mainstream media journalists are concerned about inflation and the state of the economy. Just like that, Leftmedia talkingheads are worried about how inflation is negatively impacting the economy. That’s funny because a few months ago, they were insisting it was in great shape and scratching their collective heads over why the voters couldn’t seem to get it into their thick skulls just how good the economy was.
Exhibit A was CBS’s Margaret Brennan’s weekend interview with Vice President JD Vance. In one exchange, Brennan pressed Vance on what the Trump administration would do to bring down grocery prices.
Recall that the Biden administration’s “solution” to tackling higher grocery costs — caused by the sustained high inflation triggered by his spending spree — was to make false accusations against grocery stores of profiteering and gouging. As Biden’s White House ridiculously implied in a social media posting last May: “President Biden called on grocery chains making record profits to lower prices for consumers — and they’re answering the call.”
Kamala Harris’s answer was to call for the economically disastrous idea of imposing price controls on grocers to stop the nonexistent problem of “price gouging.” She dropped that idea down the memory hole when it polled poorly, but no one thinks that’s because she changed her mind.
Irrespective of the absolute ineffectiveness of either of those “solutions” to actually bring down the price of groceries, Brennan evidently expects a similar type of response from Vance and the Trump administration. Instead, he gave her a quick lesson in Economics 101.
Vance pointed to the fact that energy prices, particularly fuel prices, have a direct impact on the cost of groceries. “All of the stuff that we’ve done on energy — to explore more energy reserves, to develop more energy resources in the United States of America. One of the main drivers of increased prices under the Biden administration is that we had a massive increase in energy prices. Donald Trump has already taken multiple executive actions that are going to lower energy prices, and I do believe that means consumers are going to see lower prices at the pump and at the grocery store, but it’s going to take a little bit of time.”
A seemingly confused Brennan pushed back, wondering how focusing on energy production would bring down the price of eggs. “Well, but Margaret,” Vance replied, “how does bacon get to the grocery store? It comes on trucks that are fueled by diesel fuel. If the diesel is way too expensive, the bacon is going to become more expensive.”
Team Biden could never bring inflation back down to earth because they spent money like drunken sailors. From 2019 through 2024, the Office of Management and Budget estimated that federal spending increased by 55%.
Of course, the Biden administration claimed this spending was needed to help Americans recover from the COVID pandemic. The truth is that COVID was simply used as an excuse to cover the Biden administration spending gobs of taxpayer dollars on a number of welfare programs and government giveaways, like Biden’s student loan “forgiveness” actions.
Where were the concerns from the Leftmedia for this massive spending? Where were the questions about how these giveaways would stoke inflation, making groceries far more expensive?
It will be interesting to chart the Leftmedia’s reaction to an economy that is legitimately roaring back into the black. What will the concerns be when Americans enjoy more money in their bank accounts?
