Championing School Choice for Children in Tennessee
As a father, I refuse to sit back while our kids continue to fall through the cracks.
I’m thrilled to announce that Tennessee legislators have finally made a game-changing move by passing the controversial legislation supporting Educational Savings Accounts (ESAs) for parents across the state. This decision comes despite pushback from both sides of the aisle, proving that change is possible when it’s about what’s best for our kids.
As a former school administrator, I see the power this legislation gives families to take charge of their children’s education. ESAs allow funds to follow the child, meaning if a school isn’t cutting it, parents can pull their child out and enroll them in a charter or private school. It’s about time we ask: Why would anyone oppose giving families this kind of choice? It feels like a setup to keep kids trapped in failing schools, and that’s not acceptable.
Research from the Beacon Center of Tennessee shows that students using ESAs generally perform better academically. Some folks argue this will hurt public schools, but the reality is that it can actually improve them. Fewer students in struggling schools means smaller class sizes, which can lead to better learning outcomes. Plus, the competition from new charter schools can drive improvement across the board.
Living in Hamilton County, I see firsthand the struggles our schools face. Many of them are ranked at the bottom in the state, especially when compared to Davidson and Shelby Counties. It’s time we acknowledge that if we don’t push for these changes, we’re failing our children — two generations deep.
As a father, I refuse to sit back while our kids continue to fall through the cracks. This ESA bill is just the start of addressing deep-rooted issues in our education system. We must rally against those who claim this program won’t work for our kids.
Take Chattanooga Preparatory School, for example — an all-boys school that’s outperforming others in the same area. It’s on track to graduate its first class with 100% college acceptance. Yet leftist activists are calling for its shutdown over hiring practices. If these uncertified teachers are getting results, shouldn’t we be asking whether we’re hiring the right people to teach our kids?
Charter schools are just one piece of the puzzle. Homeschooling and private/religious school options are also available to parents.
So, let’s give a shoutout to the Republican legislature in Tennessee for taking a stand to rescue our kids from failing schools. The ESA is a straightforward and effective solution to many issues facing our society — both nationwide and right here in Hamilton County.
Let’s make sure our voices are heard so millions of families with struggling students know they have advocates fighting for their right to a better education.
