Wednesday: Below the Fold
Cracker Barrel backs down, Trump wants more Chinese students, 5,000 illegals arrested in LA, Dems still paying off Kamala’s bills, and more.
Cracker Barrel backs down: After unveiling a new, bland logo last week, Cracker Barrel faced intense backlash from both customers and politicians. California Gov. Gavin Newsom and President Donald Trump both posted on social media about their dislike for the change. Hours after Trump “truthed” that the company should revert to the old logo yesterday, it did exactly that. “Our new logo is going away, and our ‘Old Timer’ will remain.” It’s a welcome move, but word about the controversial interior refurbishments, including changes to the classic peg game, has not come out yet. Our Mark Alexander will have more on Cracker Barrel’s foolishness in his essay this afternoon.
Trump wants more Chinese students: On Monday, President Trump announced a massive about-face for his administration. As part of his ongoing trade negotiations with China, 600,000 Chinese students will be allowed to study in the U.S. Three months ago, the State Department announced its new America First visa policy, which effectively banned new visas for Chinese students. According to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Trump is “taking a rational economic view.” However, the announcement hasn’t sat well with a number of Trump’s supporters, including Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who posted on X, “We should not let in 600,000 CHINESE students to attend American colleges and universities that may be loyal to the CCP. If refusing to allow these Chinese students to attend our schools causes 15 percent of them to fail then these schools should fail anyways because they are being propped up by the CCP.”
DC ends no-homicide streak: A man was found with a gunshot wound overnight Monday in DC. He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. It was the first homicide recorded in the nation’s capital since August 13. The 12-day streak was notable as one of the longest in the city in years, but it did not set a record; no homicides were recorded for 16 days from February to March this year. More than 1,000 arrests have been made since August 7, including MS-13 and Tren De Aragua gang members. Moreover, 39 of the 87 arrests made Monday night were illegal aliens, and one was a Mexican child-rapist who had three previous immigration encounters. The crime crackdown is still ongoing, with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announcing today that the administration will take over management of Union Station.
5,000 illegals arrested in LA: Cue the confetti. Gustavo Garcia-Miranda, a drug trafficker, became the 5,000th illegal alien arrested in Los Angeles since June. Secretary Kristi Noem promises, “This is just the beginning.” DHS and ICE have successfully been working to deport “the worst of the worst” despite Democrat mayors, judges, and Congress members fighting tooth and nail to hamstring them. When the LA ICE crackdown was just getting started, LA rioted with Molotov cocktails and bricks thrown from bridges onto law enforcement vehicles, but 4,000 California National Guardsmen and 700 Marines helped to restore order. Illegals across the country are finding that time is up.
More tariffs on India: President Trump continues to express frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to pursue a peace deal to end his war in Ukraine, warning of “very, very serious” economic consequences if Putin doesn’t relent. “It will not be a world war, but it will be an economic war,” Trump stated. Caught in the crosshairs is India, against which Trump raised additional 25% tariffs on Wednesday, pushing overall tariffs on some Indian imports to 50%. India has continued to purchase Russian oil despite Trump’s warning nations against trade with Moscow. The news sent the rupee dropping to a three-week low and India’s stock indexes down 1%, their largest drop in three months. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent charged India with profiteering, saying, “What I would call Indian arbitrage — buying cheap Russian oil, reselling it as product — has just sprung up during the war, which is unacceptable.”
Dems still paying off Kamala’s bills: Not only is the Democratic National Committee struggling to fundraise, finding itself well behind the Republican National Committee with just $15 million compared to the RNC’s $80 million, but the DNC is still paying off expenses from Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign. According to Axios, over the last six months, the DNC has paid out over $15 million in Harris campaign expenses. That includes $548,050 to Executive Fliteways Inc. for chartered flights, $2.125 million to media firm Assembly House LLC, and $237,201 to the Covington & Burling law firm. The tough part is fundraising to pay off the debts of a failed campaign, but making it even more challenging is that Harris and her team have rebuffed requests to engage in more fundraising efforts. However, the bigger issue negatively impacting the DNC’s fundraising efforts is its lack of clear policy direction, party cohesion, and leadership.
Democrats double down on DEI: Cracker Barrel didn’t need a rebrand, but one organization that does is the Democratic National Committee. The DNC Resolutions Committee voted unanimously yesterday to reaffirm its allegiance to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The resolution will now face a vote before the full DNC membership. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz summed it up Monday: “We’re not shying away from diversity as a strength and equity as a goal and inclusion being the air we breathe.” Another Democrat, Bill Owen of Tennessee, insisted that DEI is what “America is built on” and the “very foundation of the Christian church.” Apparently, no one has told the DNC that DEI is racist and that diversity without unity is only weakness. America’s traditional motto is “Out of many, one.” DEI represents the ideal of “Out of one, many.”
Study finds Biden’s migrants linked to NY crime surge: William LeRoy, a professor at Charles University in Prague, recently released his findings on a study he conducted over the past four years, which focused on the influx of migrants to New York City and its crime rate. LeRoy concluded, “The baseline increase in Hispanic arrest rates is driven primarily by cash-generating offenses, such as petit and grand larceny, indicating that economic hardship is a leading factor behind criminal behavior.” LeRoy found that crime around the hotels and facilities where migrants were housed saw a 5.5% increase. He tied this crime to a lack of employment opportunities available for these illegal aliens due primarily to their illegal status, exposing why illegal immigration generates higher crime rates.
