U.S. Suspends Egypt Aid
No cash forthcoming, and no military shipments.
The Obama State Department announced that it is cutting off hundreds of millions in military and financial aid to Egypt. The U.S. gives $1.5 billion to Egypt annually, but the cutoff affects $260 million in cash, a $300 million loan guarantee, a dozen F-16s, several AH-64 Apache helicopters, four M-1/A-1 tank kits, and other arms. Officials said in the wake of the ouster of Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi, they’re looking for a “sustainable, inclusive, non-violent transition to democracy.” But the move undermines our longtime partnership with Egypt, and could cause its presently ruling military to seek aid elsewhere. And we’ve seen that movie before.
