Professor Bryan Caplan sheds light on an interesting survey that’s been conducted by Gallup since 1959. When first presented, respondents were asked, “What about the possession of pistols and revolvers – do you think there should be a law which would forbid possession of this type of gun except by the police or other authorized person?” That question was revised slightly in 1980: “Do you think there should or should not be a law that would ban the possession of handguns, except by the police or other authorized persons?” The results are fascinating: In 1959, 60% approved a ban, and 36% opposed. Today, a mere 25% support any such measure, while 74% are opposed. It seems a growing number of individuals are clinging to their guns much to the dismay of progressive gun-grabbers.
