When You Use Bad Studies, You Get Bad Gun Laws
In the wake of the shooting at the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, the state pushed through another set of knee-jerk gun legislation. Turns out, the state’s legislature based at least a portion of the law on bad research. Colorado expanded its background check law and allocated too much money to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to hire more people to conduct an estimated 420,000 more background checks – based off some research drudged up from 1997. But bad research equals bad law. A year later and CBI only handled 7% of that estimate, about 13,600 new background checks. Republican state Senator Greg Brophy said, “Nothing good came of the passage of the law, except we found out just how anti-gun Democrats in Colorado are.” Meanwhile, gun accessory manufacturer Magpul uprooted from Colorado to settle in gun-friendly states in protest of Colorado’s gun law.
