Kerry Spied on in Middle East
Well this is awkward. According to German media, while Secretary of State John Kerry flew into the Middle East last year to try to make a peace deal, Israeli intelligence was eavesdropping on his telephone calls. Israel later used the information Kerry spilled to leverage the peace talks. Der Spiegal reports, “At the time, some of these calls were not made on encrypted equipment, but instead on normal telephones, with the conversations transmitted by satellite. Intelligence agencies intercepted some of those calls. The government in Jerusalem then used the information obtained in international negotiations aiming to reach a diplomatic solution in the Middle East.” We don’t know what’s more embarrassing: That everybody is hurting their relationships with their allies by spying on them, or that Kerry was naïve enough to spill sensitive information over an unsecured line.
