The Big Apple’s Big Crime Problem
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is struggling to deal with a summer crime wave in the Big Apple, and he announced a new $12.7 million anti-crime initiative to do so. According to The Wall Street Journal, “Mr. de Blasio’s initiative follows the model of employing former gang members to return to their communities and discourage violence. The ‘interrupters’ go to shooting victims in the hospital and attempt to mediate disputes before they can further escalate. The money will also finance school tutoring, job training and mental health programs and legal services aimed at reducing violence.” But there’s a deeper question: How could homicides with firearms be increasing in a city with such tough gun restrictions?
