Iowa Mis-Issues Unemployment Checks, Hides Mistake
The Iowa Workforce Development had a strategy for when it accidentally sent $27,000 to 85 people who did not apply for unemployment benefits: Shut up and hope the problem went away. In an email marked “CONFIDENTIAL,” the agency’s Regional Operations Manager David Eklund wrote, “We can gladly accept their offer to return the benefits, with a ‘thank you,’” but the agency wasn’t about to contact those 85 and ask for the taxpayers’ money back.
