Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko spoke to a rare joint session of Congress Thursday regarding the Russian threat to his nation. Saying Ukraine was “stabbed in the back” by Russia, he says the latter still has an “imperialistic mindset.” He urged Congress to support Ukraine with arms and extend NATO backing if not outright membership. “I urge you not to let Ukraine stand alone in the face of this aggression!” Poroshenko exhorted, for which members of Congress gave him a standing ovation. The White House, meanwhile offered $7 million (with an “m,” not a “b”) in humanitarian aid. Unfortunately, Poroshenko noted, “one cannot win a war with blankets.” And Russia is going to keep pushing. “The war these young men are fighting today is not only Ukraine’s war,” Poroshenko said. “It is Europe’s war, and it is American’s war, too. It is a war of the free world – and for a free world.” We hope he’s not holding his breath waiting for Barack Obama to listen. More…
