Will Obama Keep Iran Deal From Congress?
A weekend report from The New York Times highlights Barack Obama’s plan for nuclear talks with Iran. “No one knows if the Obama administration will manage in the next five weeks to strike what many in the White House consider the most important foreign policy deal of his presidency: an accord with Iran that would forestall its ability to make a nuclear weapon. But the White House has made one significant decision: If agreement is reached, President Obama will do everything in his power to avoid letting Congress vote on it [emphasis added].” Naturally, the White House denied the allegation. “[T]he notion that we are trying to avoid congressional consultation and input on this is preposterous,” insisted White House spokesman Eric Schultz. “This is an issue where we talk to Congress intensively. We will continue to consult with Congress heavily.” Given Obama’s record, that’s a dubious assertion. All the more so given his seeming desire to more or less let Iran off the hook. More…
