U.S. to Send Troops to Iraq?
In an effort to avoid repeating the outcome of the Syrian conflict, the Pentagon announced it would send boots on the ground to train Iraqi tribes to fight ISIL in the Anbar province. In Syria, the Free Syrian Army, the moderate rebels fighting both Bashar al-Assad’s regime and ISIL, have faced defeat after defeat. Most recently, a group affiliated with al-Qaida routed the moderate rebels from their positions in northern Syria, leading to defections. But in Iraq, the Obama administration is strengthening it’s “Inherent Resolve” after reports surfaced that ISIL killed members of the Al Bu Nimr tribe and buried them in mass graves. Hot Air’s Noah Rothman says sending troops to train and equip is political, to turn the Iraqi tribes into allies, and not in response to the evidence of genocide.
