Academia Has Forgotten Duke University Incident
Look who is doomed to repeat history. After the Leftmedia touted the story about the gang rape at University of Virginia, after higher education cracked down on the supposed rape culture on campus, the Rolling Stone story that started it all shriveled away as the facts of the story were second-guessed and debunked. Authors K.C. Johnson and Stuart Taylor Jr. wrote a book about the false accusations of rape against members of the Duke University lacrosse team and they say the media and the schools made the same mistakes. “As to lacrosse case similarities, the most obvious was the initial mob-like rush to judgment at U-Va. by left-leaning faculty, administrators, and news media in embracing the now-infamous claim by ‘Jackie’ of being gang-raped on a bed of shattered glass,” they write. “By presuming the guilt of college men accused of implausibly barbaric crimes against women and minorities, these academics were oblivious to the lessons from Duke.” But unlike the incident eight years ago, the other students at UVA weren’t critical of the kangaroo court. Instead, Johnson and Taylor write, the UVA student paper clung to the narrative of gang rape, ignoring the facts. So much for higher education. More…
