Obama Proposes $1B for Failed Head Start Program

In Obama’s wish list, er, proposed budget, he added $1 billion to the Early Head Start Program that provides infant and toddler care. While the White House says this program prepares the youngest American citizens for the rigors of public school, we don’t know what’s creepier: that the government wants to expand its role as babysitter, or that it wants to further erode the joy of childhood by championing pre-preschool. Jason Russell at the Washington Examiner writes, “However, a 2012 study by the Department of Health and Human Services does not support the administration’s claim that Head Start helps children. There were some initial benefits for participating children, but their gains were erased by the time the children reached third grade. Developmental domains, elementary school experiences, health and language development all failed to see widespread gains by the third grade.” To fix a broken educational system, the government can only think of one thing: more broken educational system.
