The Obama administration is running the victory lap over the Iran deal. Politico released a longform piece today detailing the personal injuries, the cups of espresso and the stress the American negotiating team went through to secure Barack Obama’s headlining foreign policy “accomplishment.” The sacrifices were huge: Secretary of State John Kerry broke his leg in three places and Obama rammed the deal through Congress on nothing more than legislative sleight of hand. Turns out, the negotiations over the Iran nuclear deal aren’t done. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei now says he wants sanctions against his country dropped, not merely suspended. Furthermore, Iran leaders said that the country will abide by the original deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action that did not require any countries to sign a document, but not the UN resolution which goes further in stipulations towards Iran. In other words, Iran’s supreme leader is back at the negotiating table while the U.S. has started to tie the bow atop the deal — awkward. And this embarrassment could come as soon as Monday for the U.S., according to The Middle East Media Research Institute, because the countries will meet Sept. 29 in New York to discuss the deal.
