This is hashtag diplomacy done right. While the U.S. government took it upon itself to tweet at the Islamic State as part of its counter-propaganda efforts, a group of hackers decided to disrupt the terror group’s ability to broadcast its message through social media. The “hacktivist” group Anonymous, which also involved itself in the grand jury decision in the case of Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, “declared war” against the Islamic State this week, saying it would attempt to delete social media accounts and generally disrupt the group’s strategy on the internet. In a YouTube video, a person wearing a Guy Fawkes mask and reading a statement in French said, “These attacks cannot remain unpunished, so the members of Anonymous all over the world will hunt you down. Yes, you vermin who are killing innocent people, we will hunt you down as we did since the attacks on Charlie Hebdo.” So far, the group claims they deleted 5,500 Twitter accounts related to the Islamic State. It just goes to show what people can accomplish when they go around the Obama administration’s rudderless strategy to accomplish something on their own.
