Opportunity in UK’s Vote to Leave European Union
Liberty doesn’t ensure security.
Somewhat ironically, there’s an opportunity for America to help Britain declare its independence … from the European Union. On June 23, Her Majesty’s citizens will head to the polls in a referendum vote to decide whether or not the country parts ways with the rest of Europe. According to The Heritage Foundation’s Nile Gardiner, the EU curtailed Britain’s ability to self-govern, overturning its laws, controlling its borders and negotiating its trade deals. “Brexit, a British exit from the European Union,” Gardiner wrote, “offers an opportunity for the British people to take back their freedom, and return to being a truly global power with global interests. This is good for Britain and for the vital partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom.” It won’t be easy, though. The Obama administration and the European Commission oppose the move. And market shakeups could scare Britons into voting ‘no.’ The British Pound is weakening against the Euro. According to Bloomberg, a market analyst told his clients that the potential British exit from the EU will be one of the most significant events this year, as a rising leader in the UK’s conservative party just endorsed the move. A lot of uncertainty? Yes, but Liberty doesn’t always ensure security.
