Little ‘Progress’ on Gender Roles
Millennials pat themselves on the back for eradicating differences, but their work isn’t done.
Leftists are all about resisting and eliminating the differences between genders. Newsweek ran a piece asking, “Are Millennials putting an end to gender differences?” The Millennial author of the piece proceeds to offer all sorts of ways in which the answer is “yes.” Whether it’s supporting homosexuals, equalizing gender pay levels or fairly determining which parent will stay at home, Millennials are, according to Millennials, just the best — not to mention easily more tolerant than their bigoted parents and grandparents.
But all is not yet utopian.
Another Newsweek story laments that — gasp! — men with money and power remain attractive to women (and gay guys). The story is about a feminist media study at Coventry and Aberystwyth universities in the United Kingdom that reviewed images from the London Tube posted on a site called Tube Crush. Here’s an excerpt from Newsweek:
> The “guy candy” posted on the website were mostly white men — despite London being a multicultural city — indicating that white male privilege is still an attractive quality.
> The photos and comments focused on the men’s biceps, pecs and chest as well as perceived sexual ability. Items that indicated wealth such as smart suits, watches and phones were emphasized. Pictures showing other representations of masculinity, such as fatherhood, and more emotional and awkward-appearing men were far less frequent.
> “This celebration of masculine capital is achieved through humor and the knowing wink, but the outcome is a reaffirmation of men’s position in society,” lead author Adrienne Evans from the Coventry University’s Centre for Postdigital Cultures said in a statement. The problem, according to Evans, is that “although it appears as though we have moved forward, our desires are still mostly about money and strength.”
In other words, though “progressives” thought they were on the right side of history in eradicating the gender lines, it turns out that our God-created biology plays a pretty strong part in determining gender roles. Men and women are different, despite the relentless effort of the “enlightened.” Who knew?
