Judicial activism has no place in the courts. John Adams, among other Founders, believed strongly in impartial jurisprudence. He said, “Judges … should be always men of learning and experience in the laws, of exemplary morals, great patience, calmness, coolness, and attention. Their minds should not be distracted with jarring interests; they should not be dependent upon any man, or body of men.” Today, however, we are experiencing the rise of judicial activists. The newest exemplar is Clark County (Nevada) District Court Judge Susan Johnson.

According to Judge Johnson, who claims this remark to a felon last year was made in jest, “What I’m hoping is that you will do everything you’re supposed to do so that you can get all of your civil rights, your liberties, restored to you. Okay? So if you do everything I tell you to do, you will have your civil rights restored in about three years. You’ll be able to vote for Mr. Trump. I’m sure he could use your vote.” She reportedly made similar remarks to at least two other convicts.

And while she dismisses these comments as intending to be humorous, Attorney Joel Mann “did not think Johnson’s comments were a joke and he was ‘shocked’ by what he heard,” The Washington Free Beacon reports. But regardless of the judge’s motives, there’s irony in that it’s Democrats who want the felon vote.

In April 2016, Gov. Terry McAuliffe initiated a campaign to turn Virginia blue by reinstating voting rights to nearly a quarter-million ex-felons. The Virginia Supreme Court ruled against blanket clemency. The reason for McAuliffe’s gambit? Statistics show that the majority of criminals are left-leaning. This obviously undermines Judge Johnson’s seemingly anti-Trump crack. In truth, the joke’s on her.
