Wednesday Executive News Summary

Amazon to subsidize abortion tourism, CDC bought cellphone location data to track Americans, America’s ammo shortage continues, and more.

Top of the Fold

  • Amazon to subsidize abortion tourism: The leadership at Amazon has announced a new company policy that effectively subsidizes abortion tourism. According to the new policy, if an employee lives in a location where she would need to travel over 100 miles to obtain an abortion, Amazon will cover those travel expenses up to $4,000. Terry Schilling, president of American Principles Project, reflected on the news: “It’s sadly no surprise to see Amazon assisting in efforts to circumvent pro-life laws. After all, they have been doing the woke Left’s bidding for years.” Amazon has pushed the “woke agenda even further, subsidizing the abortion industry even as they falsely categorize it as a ‘non-life threatening’ procedure,” Schilling also observed. “Conservatives by now should think twice before doing business with Amazon, and at the very least, Republican leaders should stop providing any special benefits to a company that is clearly working against the interests of American families.”

  • CDC bought cellphone location data to track Americans: Thanks to a Freedom of Information Act request by CYBER, a cybersecurity group, it has been revealed that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention purchased tracking location data from the cellphones of at least 20 million Americans. The CDC reportedly “bought access to location data” in order to perform “analysis of compliance with curfews, track patterns of people visiting K-12 schools, and specifically monitor the effectiveness of policy in the Navajo Nation.” The CDC bought the cellphone data from data broker SafeGraph. But the CDC’s aims for the tracking data appear to go beyond merely COVID-related application. As cybersecurity researcher Zach Edwards noted, “The CDC seems to have purposefully created an open-ended list of use cases, which included monitoring curfews, neighbor to neighbor visits, visits to churches, schools and pharmacies, and also a variety of analysis with this data specifically focused on ‘violence.’” Furthermore, the CDC has continued to access this mobility data despite the pandemic having ended. The report states that “this data is used by several teams/groups in the response and have been resulting in deeper in deeper insights into the pandemic as it pertains to human behavior.”

  • America’s ammo shortage continues: As firearm ownership has risen significantly in the U.S. over the last few years, what has come with it has been a long-running ammunition shortage. Dubbed the Great Ammo Shortage, millions of Americans have struggled to find ammunition for their firearms thanks to a number of factors that continue to limit the supply. The first fact is simply the reality of high demand. Ammunition manufacturers are struggling to keep up as gun ownership has risen by 41% from 2019 to 2020, which amounts to 8.4 million new firearm owners. On top of this growing demand has been supply chain issues. Sanctions against Russia, a ban on ammo made in China, as well as a global shortage of copper have all impacted supplies. The shortage has resulted in a surge in DIY ammo. “Home bullet presses are becoming increasingly popular among gun owners, as it decreases your dependence on retailers to provide your ammo,” observed Amy Myers. “Just keep your brass casings and you’ll be able to keep providing your own rounds.” The immediate outlook is that the ammunition shortages will continue throughout the year. Combine that with the high inflation rate, and the reality is ammunition prices will not be dropping significantly anytime soon.
