Monday Executive News Summary

Update on the border crisis, Biden vows to defend Taiwan, Democrats pushing tired, old gun control, and more.

Top of the Fold

  • Update on the border crisis: The Biden administration’s plan to end Title 42, a pandemic-related border policy that allows the U.S. Border Patrol to immediately deport migrants caught illegally crossing the border, was dealt another blow. Late last week, U.S. District Judge Robert Summerhays issued an injunction, ruling that the Biden administration failed to follow required protocols, which includes allowing the public to weigh in on the planned ending. Joe Biden had arranged to end Title 42 on May 23; now it will remain in place during a court fight. This is a definite win for those concerned about maintaining America’s border sovereignty, but a setback for Biden’s open-borders agenda in an effort to grow depleting Democrat ranks. Ironically, the judge’s decision brings a sigh of relief to some vulnerable Democrats in border states, where the growing border crisis has significantly eroded their election prospects.

  • Biden vows to defend Taiwan: Joe Biden is currently on a tour of Asia. During a stop in Japan, he was asked about Beijing’s ambitions toward Taiwan and if he would send in U.S. troops should China invade the island nation. Biden responded with a simple, “Yes.” When pressed to elaborate, he stated, “That’s the commitment we made.” The White House clarified that the administration’s policy “has not changed,” adding that Biden “reiterated … our One China Policy and our commitment to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait … [and] our commitment under the Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan with the military means to defend itself.” Biden’s comments are clearly designed to flout last week’s warnings from Beijing that he not mention Taiwan while on his East Asia tour. Asia expert Gordon Chang observed, “The reason the administration has to do that is because, in the last couple weeks, the Biden team had done things that made it look like it was intimidated by China, which is the reason why the Chinese were very aggressive before the trip, because they thought they had Biden on the run.”

  • Democrats pushing tired, old gun control: The recent attack in Buffalo, New York, served as the latest excuse for lefty lawmakers to attack the Second Amendment. Three Senate Democrats — Cory Booker (NJ), Bob Menendez (NJ), and Richard Blumenthal (CT) — have resurrected and reintroduced a failed 2019 piece of legislation known as the Federal Firearm Licensing Act that would require individuals to get an FFL in order to procure a firearm and be at least 21 years of age. All three senators justified the bill with the worn-out leftist refrain that it was a “common-sense measure” to address the problem of “gun violence.” Conservative radio host Andrew Wilkow quoted the Second Amendment and observed that the legislation “would literally be ‘infringement.’” Hence the reason the bill died the first time it was introduced three years ago.
