This May Be Terminal
There is a cancer in the United States Federal Government feeding on the prosperity, happiness and freedom of the American People. It is a body of nonelective government officials with bureaucratic control over almost every aspect of American Life. It is not government but bureaucracy. Merriam Webster dictionary defines government as,
“the organization, machinery, or agency through which a political unit exercises authority and performs functions and which is usually classified according to the distribution of power within it, the complex of political institutions, laws, and customs through which the function of governing is carried out, the body of persons that constitutes the governing authority of a political unit or organization and the officials comprising the governing body of a political unit and constituting the organization as an active agency”.
The same dictionary defines bureaucracy as,
“a body of nonelective government officials, an administrative policy-making group, government characterized by specialization of functions, adherence to fixed rules, and a hierarchy of authority and a system of administration marked by officialism, red tape, and proliferation.”
The problem with government in the United States is not just one of overbearing elected representatives from the political elite passing unwanted laws but even more so of overreaching and ever expanding bureaucrats. Obamacare, a bill of some 2000 pages has already generated over 20,000 pages of new rules and regulations by the functionaries in the bureaucracy created by the bill. Representatives, often with good intentions, pass bills intended to address what they believe to be a dire need of the People or to correct an injustice perpetrated by one entity or another only to find that the bureaucrats have changed the scope of the bill in their quest to apply red tape and fixed rules and expand their power. This bureaucratic cancer is eating away at the prosperity and freedom of all Americans. After Sequestration took effect essentially reducing the expansion of the bureaucrats budgets by about 2% there was wailing and ranting by those self same bureaucrats that without this 2% that was taken out of their budget expansion the world would come to an end. Never mind that they have more money to spend than the previous fiscal year. They must have their full measure of the Peoples money or they can not do the Peoples business. When was the last time, if ever, that a bureaucratic entity of government was abolished as being no longer necessary? George Washington had 4 Secretaries and an Attorney General in his cabinet. President Obama has 14 Secretaries and an Attorney General in his. What else could this be but bureaucratic creep? There are 536 elected elected officials in the U.S. Federal Government. There are over 2.7 million Federal employees excluding Military service members. Can we really say under this circumstance that Ours is a government of the People, By the People and for the People? Or is it more likely a government of the Bureaucrat, by the Bureaucrat and for the Bureaucrat? The cancer may very well be terminal.
