The Siren Song of Hope
In the minds of the socialist progressives of both major political parties in the United States of America there resides a notion that there are no lessons to be learned from the nations past. Hubristic reliance on the ideology and technology of the day blinds them to any prospect that nations are built and thrive upon ideals of generations long past. In their supreme confidence in their own abilities and in the arrogance of an imagined ideological purity they bend the truths in this nations founding documents to their own ends. Patrick Henry, a true Patriot, warned of just such hubris when he said:
“It is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren, till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst and provide for it.”
When looked at in context of our government today the Declaration of Independence shines in its meaning as brightly as in 1776.
“He has erected a multitude of New offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.”
Recent events illuminate the truth in this sentence from the Declaration of Independence as the IRS by its own admission has been harassing those not of the political ideology of the current administration. Even more onerous is the realization that since the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001 swarms of new security officers have been added across the nation in airports, bus and train terminals and on our roadways. Old women and children are searched as if they are criminals, all in order to avail themselves of air travel, even though none of the terrorists on 9/11 were women or children. We hope that the IRS, TSA, FBI, CIA, Congress, the Supreme Court and the Presidents administration with his multitude of federal officers will act only with regard to the benefit of the people and the nation. Unfortunately far too often they act according their own political ideology, in their parties interest or to serve some special interest. That is the truth of the IRS scandal unfolding today. Political power exercised to punish those of differing ideology or those that believe in the founding documents and seek a nation that lives up to the ideals of the founders is not governance, it is despotism. So let those of us who have eyes , see and those of us that have ears, hear and listen and watch for the truth no matter the consequences. For in the truths of this nations founding lies Liberty. To deny those truths is to “listen to the song of that siren, till she transforms us into beasts”.
