We are Corporal Mepham
Whimpering, slumped, helpless. Bullet straps across our chest, rifle in hand, we sit meekly while evil silences our compatriots.

“Unless you are going to deliberately prevent a thing being good, you cannot prevent it being worth fighting for. It is impossible to prevent a possible conflict of civilizations, because it is impossible to prevent a possible conflict between ideals. If there were no longer our modern strife between nations, there would only be a strife between Utopias. For the highest thing does not tend to union only; the highest thing tends also to differentiation. You can often get men to fight for the union; but you can never prevent them from fighting also for the differentiation.” —G.K. Chesterton, Heretics (emphasis added)
With apologies to Mr. Chesterton, I’m not sure Bernie Sanders’ call to plunder from some Americans to give free stuff to others is an ideal, but it obviously has its appeal. And, apparently, has enough supporters feeling inclined to fight for their right to plunder from the productive!
Whatever one may feel about Donald Trump and his supporters, his call to punch a protester in the face may be the wake up call to anyone who has ignored the clash of civilizations taking shape in this country.
Responding to a question on whether this kind of violence was unprecedented in presidential contests, a CBS reporter whimpered that he’d personally never been treated so rudely as when he attended Trump rallies. Why, by golly, they made him stay in a designated area for reporters…the insult!
To add injury to insult (too bad this young feller hasn’t had a better education), the history of this country is made up of people fighting for what they believe in, people who know not all ideas are to be tolerated! Often, as a matter of fact, willingly shedding blood to conquer bad ideas that lead to bad behavior. Yes, it’s true, some people believe that ideas have consequences: bad ideas have bad consequences and good ideas have good consequences!
Historically speaking, then, bad ideas don’t often go away quietly without a coaxing consistent with the measure of their destruction. “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” —Hebrews 9:22
It is a fundamental law of the universe of God that remission — release from bondage or imprisonment — requires conviction deep enough to spill sacred blood. The highest in love is laying down one’s life for another. The signers of the Declaration of Independence, fighting for release from bondage, pledged their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor” to demonstrate their understanding and commitment to these universal truths.
Jesus Christ, having spilled his blood in the fight for men’s souls, rose to victory inspiring in us the conviction that after the purging comes freedom and newness of life! The fight for goodness is always worth laying down our lives.
As we’ve watched our beloved country, of which each of us is merely a sojourner on our way to a better land, ripped apart and ridiculed by evil men and imposters the only question left is: Will the destruction of the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave make the checklist, or will we take up the challenge to punch back?
