One of the most infuriating parts of any election cycle is when politicians pretend to be just like us in return for votes. You like hot sauce? I like hot sauce! I even carry some in my purse. Going to the fair and gorging on ice cream and cotton candy? Sign me up! Crying baby? Give it here so I can plant a nice sloppy kiss on its fever-addled forehead, as long as the cameras are ready.

And Kamala Harris is one of the worst offenders in this game of political theater that voters seem all-too-happy to swallow, with the latest act in this never-ending play being her re-announcement that she is, in fact, a gun owner!

In 2019 — during the primary election cycle, which culminated in Harris crashing out with precisely zero votes before being selected as Joe Biden’s running mate — she said that she owns a gun “for personal safety” citing her history as a “career prosecutor.” And last week — coincidentally during another election cycle — Harris told Oprah Winfrey that any intruder who breaks into her home is “getting shot.”

“Probably should not have said that. My staff will deal with that later,” she added, in another example of Harris’ trademark fake spontaneity.

Harris is almost certainly lying, and has yet to say what type of gun she supposedly owns. But she also fails to mention that any intruder would be shot not by Harris, but by one of many heavily armed Secret Service agents who provide her with constant protection. The idea that Harris would wake up in the middle of the night and stand there in her Walmart nightgown ready to protect her family with deadly force — the reality of self-defense for real-life Americans — is simply laughable.

But what makes matters worse is, again, the fact that this is all a Trojan horse. While people like Harris hide behind their armed security and barbed wire fences and gated government buildings, they are also hiding their true agenda, which is to take away our ability to defend ourselves, our property and our families.

Because in their version of America, self-defense is a privilege only the elite deserve.

“I think for far too long on the issue of gun violence, some people have been pushing a really false choice to suggest you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away,” Harris told Winfrey. “I’m in favor of the Second Amendment, and I’m in favor of assault weapons bans, universal background checks (and) red flag laws.”

Then, Madame Vice President, you are not in favor of the Second Amendment.

If Harris is actually concerned about gun violence, then she should explain how banning so-called assault weapons would have any impact when only 3% of firearm homicides are committed with a rifle, while nearly 60% are committed with handguns. In 2020, more murders were committed with hands and fists than with rifles. Imagine Kamala Harris saying that she is pro-hands but wants to ban fists.

If she was actually in favor of the Second Amendment, then surely she would understand that universal background checks are already in place in the vast majority of gun sales and do nothing to prevent the vast number of illegal gun sales and thefts that fuel criminal gun use in America today, and that so-called assault weapons bans in the past had no statistical impact on the horrific mass shooting events that are used as an emotional cudgel to bypass data-based debate.

And if she was actually in favor of the American ideal of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, then she would admit that an estimated 2.5 million crimes are prevented by firearms every year, including 400,000 life-threatening violent crimes, eclipsing the number of firearm homicides. Put simply, guns save lives.

For those of us who don’t enjoy constant round-the-clock protection courtesy of the taxpayer, the guns in our holsters, purses and nightstands aren’t imaginary, because they’re our last (and often only) line of defense.
