There should be some questions so fundamental that answering them does not require a political debate.

What does the “W” in WNBA stand for?

Women.

That is not an insult to anyone. It is not hatred. It is not intolerance. It is the very reason the league exists.

Women’s sports were created because biological differences between men and women matter in athletic competition. Separate categories gave women the opportunity to compete, excel, win championships, earn scholarships, break records and build professional careers on a fair playing field.

If biological sex becomes irrelevant to eligibility for women’s competition, then the justification for having a separate women’s category begins to collapse.

And the people who ultimately pay the price are not politicians, activists or television commentators. They are women and girls.

Think about the young girl who first picks up a basketball at 6 years old. She spends thousands of hours practicing. Her parents drive her to tournaments before sunrise. She sacrifices weekends, vacations and countless social events. She trains when nobody is watching.

She dreams of making varsity.

Then college.

Perhaps the Olympics.

Perhaps the WNBA.

The same story unfolds in wrestling rooms, swimming pools, tennis academies, soccer fields, running tracks and countless other arenas.

Those girls deserve to know that when their championship moment arrives, the women’s category they spent a lifetime preparing to compete in will remain a women’s category.

This principle should extend throughout competitive sports.

Biological males should not compete in women’s professional basketball, women’s wrestling, women’s tennis, women’s swimming, women’s track and field or other female competitive categories. And the reverse principle should be equally clear: Leagues and governing bodies should maintain sex-based categories where biological differences materially affect competitive fairness or safety.

That position does not require disrespecting transgender Americans.

Every person deserves dignity. Every person deserves protection from harassment and discrimination. People should be free to live their lives without being mocked, threatened or dehumanized.

But human dignity and competitive fairness are not mutually exclusive.

We should be mature enough as a society to hold both principles simultaneously: Treat transgender people with compassion and respect while preserving meaningful female athletic categories.

There are also sports where the issue is not merely trophies or records. It can become a question of physical safety. Wrestling, boxing, football and other contact sports require governing bodies to take biological differences seriously because strength, size, speed and power can have consequences far beyond the scoreboard.

This is why the debate should never be reduced to partisan politics.

For generations, women fought for athletic opportunities that men already possessed. Title IX transformed American sports because society finally recognized that girls deserved meaningful opportunities of their own.

We should not spend decades building those opportunities only to become afraid to defend the biological distinction upon which women’s competitive categories were created.

And professional leagues should understand something else: The public notices when institutions appear unwilling to state obvious principles.

Fans can tolerate disagreement.

They can tolerate mistakes.

What they eventually stop tolerating is institutional cowardice.

The WNBA should be one of the strongest defenders of women’s athletics in America. Its players are extraordinary athletes who have spent their lives earning the right to compete at the highest level of women’s basketball.

Protecting that competition should not be controversial.

Nor should protecting the dreams of the 8-year-old girl shooting baskets alone in a driveway tonight, imagining the championship she might someday win.

She deserves encouragement.

She deserves opportunity.

And above all, she deserves fairness.

We can respect every human being without pretending biology has disappeared.

Women fought too long and sacrificed too much for their own place in competitive athletics for society to suddenly become embarrassed by the word “women.”

The WNBA should remember what its first letter means.

Because if women’s sports cannot confidently define and defend the category of women, eventually young girls may begin asking a devastating question:
