A Layman’s Look at Faith

How powerful is our God?

By Biff Price

What is the most powerful thing in the universe? Some scientists would quickly point out a hypernova in outer space. It is a spectacular stellar explosion. It makes one of our hydrogen bombs look like a firecracker. Unfortunately, it really isn’t the most powerful thing in the universe. The One who created the stars in the first place is the most powerful of all.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light,“ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day,” and the darkness he called “night." And there was evening, and there was morning — the first day.

Genesis 1:1-8 (New International Version)

God is omnipotent. God created everything in the universe, and He continues to create new things each moment of each day. He has never stopped creating. Every creature born anew into our world has been called forth by God. He is the giver of life.

The strongest creature known on earth is the blue whale. One hundred feet long, and weighing as much as 200 tons, no other living animal on earth has a physical power equal to it. In contrast, the most weight ever lifted by a human being was 6,270 pounds in a back lift off a trestle. While that is impressive, you may have noticed the word "omnipotent” in the first sentence of the previous paragraph.

The word is defined as “unlimited power.” No limits. None. No end to His strength. A strength that cannot be measured because it has no end. Endless strength. Unending strength. The power to create a universe and all things in it. He created the earth. He created the blue whale. He created Paul Anderson, the 1956 Olympic champion who lifted those 6,000-plus pounds in 1957. He created you and I. He created all of us!

In our first issue, we learned that God is omnipresent. That is, He is everywhere. In our second issue, we learned that He is omniscient. That is, His mind has no limitations. He knows everything. Now, we have learned that God is omnipotent. There is no end to His power.

Do you see a pattern here?

What conclusion should we draw at this point?

It appears that each one of us should want more than anything to have a right relationship with Him. A much overused and perhaps “churchy” sounding term is awesome. It is frequently used when He is described. Nevertheless, it is a very good word. His attributes ARE AWESOME!

So, what do we need to do to have a right relationship with Him?

First, accept Jesus Christ, His Only Begotten Son, as your savior.

Then, consider these words from Psalm 119:1-3 (New International Version):

Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart — they do no wrong but follow his ways.

We are to follow His ways. Essentially, this means what you and I put into our minds and hearts is what we get back out in all that we think, do, and say. He is omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent. No one in his right mind would deny Him.

This is a crossroads at which we stand. How POWERFUL is our God?!
