Easter Traditions

In solemn observance of Good Friday and in celebration of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we invite you to visit our Resurrection Day Meditations page devoted to this eternal message of hope and salvation.

To our readers of faiths other than Christianity, we welcome you to read these meditations, and we pray they serve to deepen your understanding of our faith — the faith of so many of our nation’s Founders and the inspiration of generations of leaders since.

“It is finished!” Jesus said from the cross, “and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” But on the third day…

On a personal note, many families have long and lighthearted secular traditions associated with even the most revered dates on the Christian calendar — the Christmas observance of the birth of Christ and the Easter observance of the resurrection of Jesus.

The traditions in the household of my childhood included Santa Claus and an Easter egg hunt. While my parents provided the context for the true meaning of these days, once we were old enough to embrace that meaning, as children we also celebrated with playful traditions.

Raising our own children, we did not include the pretense of a Santa Claus or an Easter bunny. But a big part of our family Christmas celebration included gathering to decorate our tree, preparing a great meal and the exchange of gifts. Our family celebration of Easter included a much-anticipated egg hunt.

Our children would rise early and excited for these celebrations.

We properly contextualize both days, but our children have carried into adulthood tender memories of our traditions.

The greatest of traditions include all of God’s story — Creation-Fall-Redemption-Restoration.

When it’s time to decorate eggs, how do you know you have a Patriotic kid in your household — one who understands that Christianity is irrevocably linked with our nation’s founding, and the gift of American Liberty “endowed by our Creator”?

This image my daughter created of Patriotic colors on eggs might be a clue!

What do colored Easter eggs have to do with this celebration? Nothing of substance, but in the context of our family traditions, they’re a playful and joyful memory!

To all of our readers, we pray for God’s blessing and peace upon you and your families.

Join us in daily prayer for our Patriots in uniform — Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen — standing in harm’s way in defense of Liberty, and for their families. We also humbly ask prayer for your Patriot team, that our mission would seed and encourage the spirit of Liberty in the hearts and minds of our countrymen.

We will resume our regular publishing schedule Monday.
