It's one of those government programs that sucks money out of your wallet while you're not looking. Twenty nine states have one, and if your state does, you should get familiar with your RPS, because it's costing you a lot of money every year.

Politicians and activists keep coming up with all sorts of ideas to make the energy sources you rely on most – oil, natural gas, and coal – more expensive. There are various versions of a carbon tax and complicated cap & trade schemes. And, most states have adopted Renewable Portfolio Standards, which essentially achieve the same goal.
