It began at Clarence Thomas’s confirmation hearings back in 1991. More recently, Neil Gorsuch was chided for taking a “stolen” seat on the Supreme Court. Brett Kavanaugh was falsely assailed, and Amy Coney Barrett was smeared to a lesser extent. More recently, Samuel Alito was piled on for flying particular flags at his house.

The hits never seem to stop coming, though the target is now Chief Justice John Roberts. On Sunday, The New York Times breathlessly reported: “In a momentous trio of Jan. 6-related cases last term, the court found itself more entangled in presidential politics than at any time since the 2000 election, even as it was contending with its own controversies related to that day. The chief justice responded by deploying his authority to steer rulings that benefited Mr. Trump, according to a New York Times examination that uncovered extensive new information about the court’s decision making.”

Unlike an era in which the Left praised the Supreme Court for decisions that favored its interests, such as Obergefell on same-sex marriage or when ObamaCare was saved by deeming it a tax, ever since Donald Trump was able to appoint a third of the High Court, SCOTUS has been on leftists’ excrement list. At the time of the ObamaCare decision, the Times reassurred, “It is not particularly unusual for justices to change their minds while writing and exchanging drafts,” referring in particular to the rumored switch by Justice Roberts on that case. Many conservatives still don’t trust Roberts after that, but he’s now becoming the whipping boy of the Left, too, as evidenced by the Times and its revelation of leaks in the Trump cases.

What we’ve found from this more recent Times article is that there was yet another series of leaks from those working within the Court. Unlike the leaks that were intended to gin up opposition to any attempt by the Court to overturn Roe v. Wade back in 2022, this New York Times piece is intended to allow the leftists to demand “reform” for SCOTUS. (By the way, we still haven’t found the Dobbs leaker, and it’s not hard to imagine that he, she, or “they” helped with this Times article.)

Keep in mind that the Left already has an agenda to change the Court, whether by packing it with another four members, enforcing artificial and unconstitutional term limits so each president can select two new members per term while shunting the term-limited justices to a “senior” status to circumvent the rule of lifetime appointment, or bringing in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico as new “states” to help ensure a perpetual Democrat Senate majority will fully control nominations. These newest leaks are just another effort to soften up the opposition to the statist agenda since there have been times over the last four long years that the Supreme Court (as well as brave state-level attorneys general) have been the only thing shutting down the Biden-Harris agenda.

With Clarence Thomas (76), Samuel Alito (74), Sonya Sotomayor (70), and Roberts himself (69) all getting a little long in the tooth, the Left is salivating about being able to watch Father Time age us out of a conservative Court. As the editorialists of The Wall Street Journal concluded, “The story in the Times is part of a larger progressive political campaign to damage the credibility of the Court to justify Democratic legislation that will destroy its independence. That this campaign may have picked up allies inside the Court is all the more worrying. We are at a dangerous juncture in American constitutional history, and Mr. Trump isn’t the only, or the greatest, risk.”

That not-so-subtle swipe at Trump aside, we can thwart the Left’s plan in November and really “fortify” the Court for decades to come, rooting out the leakers in the process.
