The Donald’s McDonald’s Run

Trump knows how to put on a show, which he happily did from the kitchen and drive-thru window near Philadelphia.

Did Kamala Harris work at McDonald’s “flipping fries” in the 1980s? It’s one of the great mysteries of life still unsolved by the “fact-checkers,” though they’ve dutifully tried to ride to her aid. We do know, however, that Donald Trump worked at McDonald’s flipping fries — at least for a couple of hours this past weekend.

Our Douglas Andrews suspects Harris is lying, as he wrote back in September. The “fact-checkers” essentially take the total lack of evidence of her employment as proof that doubters are the ones making stuff up. “Donald Trump has claimed without evidence that Ms. Harris never worked at the fast-food chain,” The New York Times huffed yesterday. “Her campaign and a friend say she did.” Without evidence, by the way — including a 1987 résumé that conspicuously left it off.

(As an aside, “without evidence” has become one of the Leftmedia’s favorite phrases to smear Trump when they don’t like what he says but can’t really prove he’s wrong.)

All in all, it’s a silly debate. A McDonald’s franchise is unlikely to have saved employee records from 1983. Harris probably didn’t save those pay stubs, either. And whether she worked there is unlikely to have any meaningful impact on pretty much anything. So what?

The real question is whether people believe Harris is telling the truth. Given her own flip-flops and egregious lies, as well as the myriad autobiographical fabrications of her boss, Joe Biden, and her running mate, Tim Walz, it’s not an unreasonable suspicion. No one trusts the Leftmedia to report the facts, either. So what would otherwise be a totally inconsequential story about a minimum-wage job instead reveals a character problem for Harris.

As for Trump, he’s a showman. The videos and pictures of him wearing an apron over the white shirt and red tie, learning to operate the fryer, and waving from the drive-thru window of a Philadelphia-area McDonald’s were classic campaign moments. He certainly grilled and fried his opponent for her “phony” story of working for the fast-food chain, joking, “I’ve now worked for 15 minutes more than Kamala at McDonald’s.”

Then again, he also magnanimously wished Harris a “happy birthday” as she turned 60 on Sunday. Asked if he would get her some fries, he responded, “I think I’ll get her some flowers. Maybe I’ll get her some fries, you’re right. … I’ll get her a McDonald’s hamburger.”

Classic Trump.

The Leftmedia almost reported with almost palpable irritation that Trump’s visit was “staged,” though we’ve gotten in trouble with the “fact-checkers” for using that word before to describe things that were set up to ensure newsworthy pictures. “For security reasons,” said CNN’s Brian Stelter, “Trump’s McDonalds visit was carefully staged ahead of time, with drive-through customers selected and screened by Secret Service.” Likewise, NBC News wrote in its second paragraph, “The franchise in Feasterville was closed for normal business during Sunday’s photo op. The customers who went through the drive thru were pre-selected by the franchise and the local Trump campaign team, according to a person familiar with the event. The cars were also screened and searched, and the people in them were wanded down, according to the source.”

Yeah, the guy’s been shot at twice. Of course the Secret Service protected him.

“Wait are you telling me Trump isn’t actually an employee of McDonald’s???” a clearly gobsmacked Matt Walsh teased. “Massive scandal. I’m stunned.”

Harris is desperate to connect with voters with that phony “I grew up in a middle-class family” canard. Trump, of course, did not grow up middle class, but somehow, he finds it far easier to make the connection. He’s the blue-collar billionaire, and it drives Democrats nuts. (Short drive, I know.)

In fact, Trump left his shift at McDonald’s and headed to Pittsburgh for the Steelers-Jets NFL game Sunday evening. He visited the Alabama-Georgia game three weeks ago. At both venues, friendly crowds greeted him, and he egged on a “U-S-A! U-S-A!” chant last night. Is anyone that excited about Kamala Harris?
