Thursday Executive News Summary

An unimpressive jobs report, NPR retracts story on Alito’s retirement, Mamdani’s warmth of collectivism, Rubio kicks out a Cuban commie, and more.

Unimpressive jobs report
Just 57,000 jobs were added in June, coming in well below economists’ anticipated estimate of 115,000. Interestingly, the headline unemployment rate dropped slightly to 4.2%, below the forecasted 4.3%. Economists expected an employment boost from the FIFA World Cup, but it has yet to materialize. Meanwhile, the stock market rose following the weaker-than-expected report. It appears that the Federal Reserve, now led by new Chairman Kevin Warsh, will hold off on raising interest rates.

NPR retracts story on Alito’s retirement
Amid a slew of high-profile Supreme Court decisions this week, NPR published a story reporting that Justice Samuel Alito was retiring from the Court. The outlet quickly retracted the story, issuing an on-air correction and reaching out to the 76-year-old justice to apologize. Speculation has flown that perhaps NPR had a scoop on the issue; the reporter, Nina Totenberg, is known for her knowledge of the inner workings of the Supreme Court. However, this may have been a simple mistake. News organizations frequently pre-write stories in expectation of an event. If Justice Alito does retire soon, it would give President Donald Trump an opportunity to replace the stalwart conservative with a like-minded justice. But if the Democrats retake the Senate in November, it would make the nomination of a conservative justice all but impossible.

Saint Paul, MN Columbus, OH, celebrates Somali Independence Day
Readers of The Patriot Post may be surprised to learn that Columbus, Ohio, has one of the largest Somali populations in the U.S. The Buckeye State’s Somali population has risen dramatically, from a few thousand in the early 2000s to an estimated 60,000 today. Ergo, on Wednesday, as the rest of the country prepared to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day, the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department was busy wishing Somalia a happy Independence Day. The post added, “City Hall will be raising the flag of Somalia,” garnering extreme criticism from American Patriots. A city spokesman corrected the record: the Somali flag was not raised over the city hall of a heartland American city, and the social media post was deleted.

Judge blocks VA’s ICE mask ban
Judge Robert E. Payne has issued an injunction against Virginia enforcing its recently passed law banning ICE and other immigration agents from wearing masks while engaging in enforcement operations in the commonwealth. Payne reasoned that the law violated federal immunity because it “directly regulates the conduct of federal law enforcement.” He also noted, “There is evidence that enforcement of the Mask/Identity statute would expose federal employees to real risk of physical harm in, and in connection with, the discharge of their duties when enforcing federal immigration law and policy.” Similar laws in California, New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia have also been blocked from going into effect.

U.S. death rate falls to record low
The death rate in the U.S. in 2025 fell to just 689.2 deaths per 100,000, down from 722.1 the previous year, according to the CDC. Deaths fell for every age group, for both men and women, and for most ethnic groups — primarily due to the drop in drug overdoses, an issue the Trump administration has made a high priority with its focus on stopping drug smuggling. Conversely, flu and pneumonia deaths rose from a total of 48,139 to 56,511. Johns Hopkins researcher Geeta Sood attributed that to several severe flu seasons recently, but was quick to highlight the rise in anti-vax sentiment as well.

Trump Accounts premiere on Saturday
On the Fourth of July, Trump Accounts for American children will go live. The accounts are open to all American children under 18, but those born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, will receive $1,000 in seed money. Billionaire philanthropists Michael and Susan Dell have additionally promised $250 in seed money for 25 million children born before 2025. Parents and employers will be able to add $5,000 a year to the accounts, which will be invested in mutual funds or exchange-traded funds for the “growth period” of the account — that time between the account’s opening and the child turning 18. Once the beneficiary reaches the age of majority, the accounts will function like a traditional IRA.

Mamdani’s warmth of collectivism
The lowered expectations of communism come at you fast. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is encouraging residents of The Big Apple to set their thermostats to 78 degrees during a summer heat wave. Mamdani insists city buildings will abide by the guideline as well and that all New Yorkers need to do their part to ensure a stable electrical grid. Social media was quick to light up the openly socialist mayor over the issue: “I’ll be setting my AC to 62 degrees… as a direct retaliation,” said one user. There is, of course, another solution to increased power demand: increase the supply by building nuclear power plants. New York has spent recent years shutting down its nuclear generation capability.

Pro-Israel lives are cheap
A pro-Palestinian protester, Loay Abdelfattah Alnaji, a professor at Moorpark College who attacked a 69-year-old Jew, Paul Kessler, which resulted in his death, has been sentenced to one year in a California county jail and two years’ probation. Alnaji pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and battery but was not charged with a hate crime. Video footage from November 2023, just weeks after Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, reveals Alnaji and other pro-Hamas demonstrators crossing the street to confront Kessler, who was holding an Israeli flag. Alnaji was yelling at Kessler and violently hit him in the head with his megaphone, causing Kessler to fall backward onto the ground and hit his head. He died the next day. The DA’s office for Ventura County disagreed with the court’s ruling, stating that the crime warranted state prison rather than the county jail. The real objection is that this Jew-hating killer received the same light sentencing that many misdemeanors and DWIs receive.

Carlson’s new political party
Former Fox News host and current podcaster Tucker Carlson recently announced that he was leaving the Republican Party, claiming that it no longer represented the interests of Americans. It was not a surprising announcement given his growing anti-Israel views as well as his increased criticism of the Trump administration. This week, after asserting that both Republicans and Democrats “are in lockstep solidarity with each other,” Carlson announced his plan to create a new political party, stating, “There’s going to be a third party, and I’m going to do everything I can to bring that about.” Well, it’s been tried several times before, and the last time it actually succeeded in getting its nominee elected president was back in 1860.

Rubio kicks out a Cuban commie
On Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio canceled the legal residency status for one Carlos Antonio Lloga Dominguez, a Cuban national who has been accused by the State Department of spending “more than a decade working as a foreign subversive for the Communist Cuban regime’s premier influence and intelligence front group in the United States.” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigot explained that “Lloga Dominguez spent more than a decade employed by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the People (ICAP), [and] has continued to maintain ties to the transnational communist subversion network throughout his time residing in our nation.” ICAP has long been tied to Cuban intelligence. Lloga Dominguez will soon be deported with his wife and son.
