Gov’t Employees Owe $3.3B
Here’s a way to fix that.
How much does the government owe itself? According to a report by the IRS Federal Employee/Retiree Delinquency Initiative, over 318,000 former and current federal employees owe about $3.3 billion in back taxes. Granted, CBS notes, this is below average compared to the rest of the nation. About 3.3% of federal workers have trouble writing a check to the IRS, compared to 8.7% for the rest of the nation. But it still presents a problem for a government that should lead by example in paying taxes. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) introduced a bill that would disqualify people delinquent on tax debts from working in the government. Maybe this is one way we can boot the people only in “public service” because it’s a cushy job. Case in point: CBS reports employees in the Department of Veteran Affairs “had the highest tax amounts due for any federal agency, at over $145 million.” More…
