Well here’s a novel idea if you’re “dead broke” and need travel money: Simply make the non-profit you established pick up the bill. That’s what the Clintons did, and in 2013, they racked up a bill of more than $8 million jetting around the country, which was picked up by the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation. Hillary was the big spender of the bunch – likely because she is planning another run for the White House in 2016. In documents filed to the IRS, the Clinton Foundation notes, “The Board recognizes that, due to extraordinary security and other requirements, William J. Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton may require the need to travel by charter or in first class, the determination of which will be made on a case-by-case basis.” Security, sure, but the Clinton’s travel expenses made up 10% of the foundation’s budget. So does this mean the non-profit foundation is funding the early moves of a candidate as she positions herself for a grand campaign for the office of president? At the very least it’s unethical to use funds people donated “to improve global health, increase opportunities for women and girls, create economic opportunity and address climate change” for some expensive plane tickets.
