Blacks Homeschooling Over Mistreatment in Public Schools
Some black parents have taken matters into their own hands. Tired of the poor school standards, tired of the racism their children have encountered in state-run schools, they have turned to homeschooling to provide a better education for their children. According to the National Home Education Research Institute, black families are the fastest rising demographic now turning to homeschooling. Currently, they make up 10% of the nation’s homeschooling population. Ama Mazama, an African-American Studies professor at Temple University, started homeschooling her three children three years ago. “We have all heard that the American education system is not the best and is falling behind in terms of international standards,” she said. “But this is compounded for black children, who are treated as though they are not as intelligent and cannot perform as well, and therefore the standards for them should be lower.” Kudos to those parents, and, hopefully, the federal government gets the hint that it should take a step back from micromanaging schools.
