Clinton Opposes Obama’s Immigration Policies
Administration enforcement provides cover for politics.
It’s hard to understand just what Hillary Clinton’s strategy is regarding immigration policy. The Democrat front-runner recently condemned the Obama administration’s enforcement action against Central Americans who entered this country illegally and were ordered to return to their countries. Last week, the Department of Homeland Security conducted raids in Texas and Georgia. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said, “As I have said repeatedly, our borders are not open to illegal migration. If you come here illegally, we will send you back consistent with our laws and values.” But Clinton said this only strikes terror inside immigrant communities. In doing so, she joined the other Democrat candidates, Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley, in taking a lax immigration stance — a stance more liberal than even the Obama administration. Clinton’s move is clearly political pandering because in 2014, she was saying the children that were coming across the border in droves seeking asylum should be deported back to their countries of origin, displeasing progressive immigration groups. Maybe she’s found a renewed disregard for the Rule of Law. More to the point, this is a good cop/bad cop routine. The administration is half-heartedly enforcing the law so as to provide political cover for Democrats to pander to Latinos that they’ll be more welcoming.
