Finally, Something Worthy of Obama’s Name
The president lends his name to a new parasite.
It’s a long-running joke that politicians are nothing more than parasites and blood suckers. Well, now it seems, at least for Barack Obama, this will literally be the case. Well, sort of. A recently retired biology professor at Saint Mary’s College has named a tiny flat-wormed parasite after Obama. This parasite lives in the blood of turtles, and professor Thomas Platt, who has been credited with discovering over 30 new species, insisted that he named the parasite to honor Obama. When questioned on why he chose this particular parasite to name after Obama he said, “It’s long. It’s thin. And it’s cool as hell.”
Truth be told, this is not the first animal to be named after Obama. He also has a spider, a fish and an extinct lizard sporting his moniker. But parasites seem to be the preferred creature, as this is currently the second one named after him. So here’s to Baracktrema obamai the turtle blood parasite, may all turtles prosper in spite of your presence.
