Trump’s Communications and Counsel

He picks his campaign manager for a role, and taps his press secretary.

It seemed only a matter of time before Donald Trump would select his campaign manager Kellyanne Conway to fill some role within his administration. Today it was announced that Conway would be counselor to the president. In a written statement, Trump said, “She is a tireless and tenacious advocate of my agenda and has amazing insights on how to effectively communicate our message.” In other words, Conway is now in a position to be one of the more highly influential member of Trump’s White House. So far this group includes both Steve Bannon and Reince Priebus, the latter of whom will be Trump’s chief of staff.

In many ways and especially down the final stretch of the campaign, Conway was Trump’s face to the media. She skillfully honed Trump’s message as well as tactfully responded to his many detractors and critics in the mainstream media. Coming across as genuine, polite and likable, Conway still had no fear of jumping in and going toe to toe with media and Hillary Clinton operatives alike (but we repeat ourselves). Conway’s tenacity was on full display after the election when she fended off accusations of racism from Clinton’s sore-losing campaign communications director Jennifer Palmieri. Once again, Trump rewards a loyal person he trusts.

Trump also named Republican National Committee official Sean Spicer as his White House press secretary, rounding out his communications team. It seems to us that serving as the mediator between Trump and the media might be the most unenviable position in Washington, so we wish Spicer the best. As Conway put it, “This will be a traditional White House in the sense that you will have a great deal of press availability on a daily basis and you’ll have a president who continues to be engaged with the press.” That, too, would be a change from Barack Obama, who despite the Leftmedia’s boundless love for him has held them at arm’s length for his entire presidency.
