CNN Stands by Its Peddling of More Fake News
Lanny Davis admits that he lied about not being the source of the Trump Tower story.
One month ago, CNN ran a “bombshell” story reporting that President Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, who was being investigated by Robert Mueller, alleged that Trump knew about the infamous June 2016 Trump Tower meeting prior to its occurrence. In its story, CNN claimed that an unnamed source confirmed that Cohen had direct knowledge of Trump having received the news of the impending meeting because he was present in a meeting with Trump when Donald Trump Jr. informed him of his planned meeting with a Russian lawyer who was offering dirt on Hillary Clinton. Whew!
Upon CNN’s release of its story, other mainstream media outlets picked it up and ran it as well, finding the same unnamed source as credible. Following the story Trump, Trump Jr., and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani were quick to declare the story to be a complete fiction and another instance of fake news.
Well, it appears that Trump was right about the MSM and specifically CNN once again. Last week, Cohen’s lawyer, Lanny Davis, a long-time friend and defender of the Clintons, admitted that he was the unnamed source for CNN’s story.
Ironically, it was in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper where CNN’s story’s began to fall apart. During the interview, Davis admitted that, contrary to the news network’s reporting, his client (Cohen) had no knowledge as to whether Trump had prior awareness of the infamous meeting. Davis’s admission came after Cooper pressed him over the recent statements from two members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence — Richard Burr (R-NC) and Mark Warner (D-VA) — both of whom noted that in Cohen’s sworn testimony he stated that he first learned of the Trump Tower meeting when it was reported last July.
“So Michael Cohen does not have information that President Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting with the Russians beforehand or even after?” Cooper asked Davis. “No, he does not,” Davis responded. But Davis was quick to cover his initial lie with another stating, “We were not the source of the story.”
Fast-forward to Monday when BuzzFeed, of all places, actually engaged in some legitimate investigative journalism and determined that CNN’s unnamed source for its original story is none other than Davis. As BuzzFeed reports, “Davis told BuzzFeed News that he did, in fact, speak anonymously to CNN for its story, which cited ‘sources with knowledge’ — meaning more than one person. ‘I made a mistake,’ Davis said. Regarding his comments about a month later to Cooper, he added, ‘I did not mean to be cute.’” Davis has an interesting way admitting that he lied, because it’s anything but “cute.”
So has CNN backed off its erroneous story? Sadly, it appears that the Leftmedia outlet is too deeply caught in the throes of Trump Derangement Syndrome to engaging in honest reporting. No, the anti-Trump resistance must live on, no matter what the actual truth may be.
