McSally Is the Best Choice for Arizona

The defeated Republican veteran is a good choice to take John McCain’s Senate seat.

Rep. Martha McSally will be appointed by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey to fill the Senate seat of the late John McCain after the announced resignation of Jon Kyl, who’d held the seat since McCain’s death. McSally recently lost the November election for Jeff Flake’s seat to Democrat Krysten Sinema, so we’re glad to see a Patriot like her be appointed to fill another seat.

“All her life, Martha has put service first — leading in the toughest of fights and at the toughest of times,” Ducey said. “With her experience and long record of service, Martha is uniquely qualified to step up and fight for Arizona’s interests in the U.S. Senate. I thank her for taking on this significant responsibility and look forward to working with her and Senator-Elect Sinema to get positive things done.”

The challenge for McSally will be holding the seat not only in the special election to fill the rest of McCain’s term 2020, but then again for a full term in her own right in 2022. By all accounts, she ran a bit of a lackluster campaign, and thus she lost despite her opponent’s exposed contempt for Arizona voters. She also reportedly offended the McCain family by steering clear of mentioning him for strategic political reasons. No doubt McSally will benefit from incumbency, however, and we’re guessing she learned a thing or two in defeat that will help her win in 2020 and beyond.
