‘Defund’ Democrats Are the Rankest of Hypocrites

A woke congressman works to defund his local police — except for those who protect his wife and kids.

Here in our humble editorial shop, we love pointing out leftist hypocrisy. And, lucky for us, there’s no shortage of it. Last month, for example, we ran a story about St. Louis Democrat Congresswoman Cori Bush, who has famously and repeatedly called for defunding the police but who is also wealthy enough and privileged enough to purchase her own private security.

Sadly, the same can’t be said for Bush’s constituents, who live in one of the nation’s most murderous cities. Apparently, she thinks residents of the crime-ridden Hyde Park neighborhood, for example, where the average home value is $13,525 and the median income is $17,742, can simply shell out tens of thousands to hire their own police protection. And of the 130 murder victims in St. Louis so far this year, all but 10 were black — 98 men and 22 women.

Black Lives Matter, eh, Cori? Let ‘em eat lead, she all but said.

Bush’s fellow “Squad” members, New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar, and Massachusetts’s Ayanna Pressley, are all among the House’s biggest spenders on private security. Still, when it comes to hypocrisy, Bush and her colleagues are Bush Leaguers compared to the only male member of the Squad, New York Congressman Jamaal Bowman. How so? Well, whereas Bush and the others at least have the decency to buy their own protection, Bowman has called for defunding while at the same time requesting that a local police force watch over his wife and children back home in New York.

“We screamed defund the police, so we could reallocate those resources toward something that focuses on true public health and public safety,” he tweeted back in April. Continuing on about a new law enforcement tool being tested in New York City, a “robo dog” that can conduct surveillance of a crime scene without pulling a gun or jeopardizing the safety of human police officers, Bowman kept on screaming: “Not only do I feel physically occupied in my community by too many police, now y'all bring robot police?”

See it for yourself:

What a hypocritical huckster this guy is. Dorothy Moses Schulz, an emerita professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan, seems to concur:

At least in the chutzpah competition, Jamaal Bowman may have outdone other Squad members. After being elected in 2020, he wasted no time voicing support for the George Floyd Act, calling it merely a floor, not a ceiling, in the battle for police reform. Bowman, who has called cops agents of “white supremacy,” represents portions of the Bronx and Westchester County — where, upon his request, the Yonkers Police Department, the county’s largest, is providing extra protection for the single-family home he shares with his wife and children.

“Not long ago,” said Yonkers Police Benevolent Association President Keith Olson, “the Congressman called for dramatically less policing in the most violent, crime ridden neighborhoods. … Asking these same police officers to protect your family while creating policies that make communities of color less safe is simply disgraceful.”

Yep, “disgraceful” just about sums up “Representative” Jamaal Bowman.
