Chronicle

THE FOUNDATION

“The republican is the only form of government which is not eternally at open or secret war with the rights of mankind.” –Thomas Jefferson

INSIGHT

Wisdom from Republican Presidents past: “It is a greater honor to be right than to be president – or popular, for statesmanship consists rather in removing causes than in punishing or evading results – thus, it is the rarest of qualities.” –James Garfield

“Weasel words from mollycoddles will never do when the day demands prophetic clarity from greathearts. Manly men must emerge for this hour of trial.” –Theodore Roosevelt

“There is only one form of political strategy in which I have any confidence, and that is to try to do the right thing – and sometimes be able to succeed.” –Calvin Coolidge

“What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight – it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” –Dwight Eisenhower

“Freedom is indivisible – there is no ‘s’ on the end of it. You can erode freedom, diminish it, but you cannot divide it and choose to keep ‘some freedoms’ while giving up others.” –Ronald Reagan

UPRIGHT

“In this different kind of war, we may never sit down at a peace table. But make no mistake about it, we are winning and we will win. We will win by staying on the offensive, we will win by spreading liberty.” –George W. Bush

“President Bush sees world terrorism for the evil that it is.” –Rudy Giuliani

“[My husband] was a fireman who ran through the doors of the World Trade Center, but did not walk out. He was a patriot, a tremendous spirit. Timmy is my hero. I am honored to share him with you, just as I am proud to lend America my oldest son, Kevin, who is headed to Iraq with his Navy unit. America must never forget the sacrifices of September 11 or those that are made every day by our sons and daughters in the military service.” –Tara Stackpole, wife of FDNY firefighter killed on 9/11

“Kerry has draped himself in red, white and blue for 2004. But his new clothes cannot obscure the truth – that his record is one of appeasement and weakness.” –Mona Charen

“[W]hen Kerry castigates President Bush for acting ‘solo’ in Iraq, what he’s really crabbing about is that the United States is acting without France. For Kerry and his Francophile set, acting sans France is a major problem, a veritable crisis. Since he is one of two men who may occupy the White House next year, his crisis is our concern.” –Diana West

“I’ve never before supported a Republican for president. But I’m doing so this time because of the one issue that trumps everything else: international terrorism. In my judgment, the Democrat Party just doesn’t have the stomach to stand up to the terrorists. But Bush is a fighter. … Already, most of the world is caving. If you didn’t have Bush standing there, you’d have everybody following Spain and the Philippines.” –Ed Koch, former NYC mayor

EDITORIAL EXEGESIS

“Apart from a terrorist attack using weapons of mass destruction, few foreign policy threats are as disturbing as the possibility that rogue regimes in Iran and North Korea could soon both have nuclear weapons. Whether President Bush or John Kerry is elected president, the new administration will find dealing with these countries one of its most difficult challenges. The difference is that the Bush administration has labored – thus far unsuccessfully – to come to grips with these problems for several years. Mr. Kerry has done little beyond offering empty slogans. His criticism of Mr. Bush for supporting deployment of missile defenses to protect the country against ballistic missile attack will doubtless bolster hopes in Tehran and Pyongyang that they can deter the United States from applying force against them if Mr. Kerry is elected. …Mr. Kerry…has been irresponsible in the extreme. He touts the failed EU diplomatic initiative as a superior alternative to Mr. Bush’s approach to Iran. One of Mr. Kerry’s top foreign policy spokesmen, Rand Beers, blames Mr. Bush for blocking talks with Iran. Mr. Kerry told The Washington Post that Mr. Bush made a serious mistake in not talking directly with Pyongyang, and offered the Clinton administration’s approach – highlighted by the 1994 agreement to provide the regime with energy and financial assistance in return for a promise to halt its nuclear weapons programs (which North Korea violated from the start) – as a model he would attempt to follow. Mr. Kerry wants to take us back to the good old days when the Clinton gang knew North Korea was cheating, but pretended otherwise to continue a dialogue that gave Pyongyang cover to build more nukes. That’s foolishness, not leadership.” –The Washington Times

DEZINFORMATSIA

This week’s “Leftmedia Puffery” Award: “I censored myself for 50 years when I was a reporter. Now I wake up and ask myself, ‘Who do I hate today?’” –Helen Thomas

From the Commissars of Public Opinion: “U.S. marines have done most of the fighting in Najaf, which has killed hundreds, driven oil prices to record highs and touched off clashes in seven other southern and central cities.” –Reuters, blaming the Marines for rising oil prices, while (not meaning to) crediting them for killing terrorists

This week’s “Leftmedia Machiavellian” Award: “Why do you think it’s okay to wear a bandage like that? Do you really believe he didn’t earn his medals or his purple hearts?” –George Stephanopoulos to a veteran wearing a “Purple Owie” Band Aid

“Did you squirm a little when you saw the guy wearing the purple heart?” –Peter Jennings to Newt Gingrich, who replied, “No, I think it’s funny.”

This week’s “Propagandum Magnum” Award: “The war on terrorism has not been successful yet and the war in Iraq is not going well.” –Tom Brokaw

This week’s “Left Media Buster” Award: “[W]hen the power-brokers mess up, a free press should be the last refuge for ousting scoundrels – but we journalists can fulfill that function only when we grasp once again that our job is to tell the truth, even when it is politically inconvenient.” –Marvin Olasky

THE DEMO-GOGUES

From the “Village Matriarch” Files: “I’m hoping the entire administration is fired on November 2.” –Hillary Rodham Clinton Rodham

“This week’s "Hyper-Hypocrisy” Award: There is no doubt that the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads (attacking Kerry’s Vietnam service) have had an impact on the race. [Those attacks] shift the focus away from Iraq and worrisome economic trends.“ –James Carville **By "worrisome economic trends” they mean economic growth, which IS worrisome for them.

“We scheduled this [campaign rally] on a Thursday so we wouldn’t interfere with your weekend trip to Canada to buy prescription drugs, folks.” –John Kerry

This week’s “Leftpinkie” Award: “We have seen what this administration’s approach does to our standing in the world. It isolates us. It costs us respect from our allies. It means we must face these new challenges alone. And their failed leadership means that they cannot deal with the new threats we face in America.” –John Edwards

This week’s “Demo-Goguery” Award: “We can’t control thousands of people who want to protest the Bush administration. They’re there solely because of the failed presidency of George Bush. … If [the Republicans] can link us to a bunch of lawbreakers, they think people will not pay attention to the promises they’ve broken.” –Terry McAuliffe

From the “Braying Jackass” Files: “You’d be amazed at the number of people who want to introduce themselves to you in the men’s room. It’s the most bizarre part of this entire thing.” –John Kerry on life as a presidential candidate **The Democrats are now officially the party of McGreevey.

VILLAGE IDIOTS

This week’s “Tyranny of the Few” Award: “They’re not one of us, they’re making us look bad.” –Arrested protestor at the rally against the GOP after he assaulted a counter-protestor **You decide who’s making who look bad!

“Shut up, white boy.” –Anti-Bush T-shirt worn by a New York City protestor **Racism, hate speech, anyone?

“You people sold all that out, you sold out your own class to join the f***ing pigs. You sold out your own people. Someday you will stand before some kind of judgment.” –Protestor “Zack from California” to a black police woman **Meet the wholesome folk who support Kerry!

From the “Village Documentarian” Files: “I harbor no ill will to the Bush family, and in fact, without them I wouldn’t be a filmmaker, probably.” –Michael Moore **And a millionaire, probably…

This week’s “Je$$e Ja¢k$on ‘I have a $¢heme’” Award: “There is a good diet for America. The no-carb diet: no Cheney, no Ashcroft, no Rumsfeld, no Bush, and no Rice.” –Je$$e Ja¢k$on

From the “Unmentionables” Department: “It is really important for us to get our vaginas to the polls.” –Playwright Eve Ensler, best known for penning the trash “The Vagina Monologues.” **Hey, we thought the operative phrase was “Vote with your feet” – wasn’t it?

This week’s “Village Idiot Buster” Award: “If you’re listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you’re a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we’re morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal. Besides, when I read the list of people who are supporting Kerry, if I wasn’t already a Bush supporter, I would have immediately switched. Linda Ronstadt? Don Henley? Geez, that’s a good reason right there to vote for Bush.” –Rock star Alice Cooper

SHORT CUTS

“Maybe this explains John Edwards’s need for two Americas – one where John Kerry can vote for something, and another where he votes against the same thing.” –Rudy Giuliani

“I tried to accept that letter [from Max Cleland] and he would not give it to me. He would not face me. He kept rolling away from me. He’s quite mobile.” –Jerry Patterson, Vietnam Vet tasked with accepting Cleland’s letter to President Bush

“I watch a lot of the cable news shows, so I understand that you were never in Vietnam.” –John Stewart to John Kerry

“In this great struggle, we need a commander-in-chief who is a beacon, not a weathervane.” –Rep. Heather Wilson

“Kerry said the [Swift Boat] ads hurt him deeply and emotionally then asked, ‘Does that make me eligible for any kind of medal?’” –Craig Kilborn

“‘This is what democracy looks like!’ the [Democrat] crowd chants as they demand that Republicans’ right to assembly and speech be beaten to a bloody pulp.” –Shawn Macomber

“What if Bush is re-elected? If they lose to him again, Democrats will need more than just consolation. They’ll need therapy.” –Charles Krauthammer

“The GOP Convention stars John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and Arnold Schwarzenegger this week. What a line-up. The party chose a guy who bombed Hanoi, a guy who cracked down on the homeless and the Terminator, and these are the voices of moderation.” –Argus Hamilton

NIGHTLINES

David Letterman…. “Top Ways New York City is Preparing for the Republican National Convention:” Special group rate on rental cars for all the visiting terrorists; To meet increased demand, extra muggers being dispatched to midtown; Seventh avenue sidewalks have been closed to taxi traffic; Neckline being raised on Statue of Liberty’s robe to John Ashcroft’s specifications; Hello Deli changing price of grilled cheese sandwich from twelve dollars to seventeen dollars; Three words: Bomb sniffing rats; At President Bush’s request, the Empire State Building is on “King Kong Alert”; While Cheney is in town, Waldorf-Astoria sign changed to read “undisclosed location hotel”; Bill Clinton is showing up to the convention just to get patted down.

Jay Leno…. John Kerry reportedly flew in his private hairdresser before [a campaign rally] for a total cost of $1,000. That’s $1,000 for a haircut, which sounds like a lot, but have you seen the size of Kerry’s head? …. You know what country had a disappointing performance [in the Olympics] – Mexico. Well sure, all their fastest runners came here years ago. …. Our USA team ended up winning 103 medals – although today, a group of Vietnam swift boat veterans came forward to say that our athletes really didn’t earn all their medals. …. Tonight in New York City, the Republicans began their convention in the traditional way – with a prayer…for more money. …. A lot of Republicans arrived at the convention in swift boats, or as they call them, yachts. …. In the latest issue of GQ magazine, John Kerry talks about what a man should look for in a woman. GQ? If John Kerry is going to talk about what he likes in a woman, shouldn’t it be in Fortune or Money magazine? …. Al Gore was caught driving 75 miles an hour on the highway up in Oregon and cited for speeding. Well you know Al Gore, he’ll do anything to get his name on a ticket now. Poor Al, he didn’t get paid because he didn’t get the pizza there on time. …. Here’s a big surprise in the latest polls – it seems Ralph Nader is now in the double digits. There’s something like 12 people who say they’ll vote for him. …. Have you heard about this? There’s a new thing called alcohol without liquid. It’s a machine that combines booze with oxygen to create an alcohol mist that you just inhale. Well this is perfect for airline pilots, no more fumbling with those little bottles, now that mask can just fall down mid-flight.
