The Left’s Resistance Fantasy

Harvard grad students think they’re living in Harry Potter’s world.

The world of fantasy can be fun, as thousands of fans can attest to every year at various comic-con festivals across the country. Dressing up as one’s favorite comic book hero/villain or sci-fi/fantasy character and attending a convention with other super-fans can be an experience like no other. And yet whether one is brushing up on a Klingon greeting or donning a Gryffindor robe, the intent is to engage in the fantastical, not the literal. While fictional stories may find parallels in reality, it’s important to remember that the former is simply a creation out of someone’s imagination. Unfortunately, some folks, particularly in academia, sometimes blur the lines between fantasy and reality.

Inspired by “Dumbledore’s Army” of the Harry Potter books — in which a group of students assembled to battle the tyrant of Hogwarts School, Dolores Umbridge — a group of Harvard graduate students recently formed the “Resistance School” designed with the expressed purpose of opposing Donald Trump. And surprise, surprise, the group of students has garnered the services of several former staffers for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. The group states on its website, “On November 8, we lost more than just the presidency. We lost yet more ground in the decades-long campaign against progressive values. Republicans now control the Senate, House, and more state legislatures than they have in almost 200 years. Those losses have emboldened the right to launch an all-out attack against our nation’s creed — that all are created equal.”

Wands at the ready?

The school will involve four in-person lectures that will be live streamed to other “resistance” groups. Reading lists for the lectures include essays on Black Lives Matter, the Women’s March and “Black and Palestinian Queer Struggles.” Surprisingly, the list also includes the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. (No word on whether it includes Harry Potter’s “Fantastic Beasts.”) Some of the sessions are entitled “How to Mobilize and Organize our Communities,” “How to Structure and Build Capacity for Action” and “Onwards: How to Sustain the Resistance Long-Term.”

It certainly appears these young folks are under the spell of leftism, and their exercise in cosplay isn’t going to prepare them for the real world.
