Will Smith’s Award-Winning Chris Rock Slap
Smith popped Rock after a joke directed at Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
In case you missed the latest celebrity award confab — because most Americans could care less about celebrities — a top award went to Will Smith for an acting role in some movie.
However, it could have gone to Smith for the role he played ostensibly defending the “honor” of his wife after host Chris Rock insulted her. Apparently Smith’s bizarre “marriage” is open to everything except bad jokes.
Was it real or was it scripted? The uncensored version of the altercation can be viewed here (harsh language), and the celebrity rag “Page Six” gives the insider account.
One social media observer noted, “The reason I know the whole Will Smith Oscar slap was not a planned liberal hoax is that it didn’t make Republicans look bad and it didn’t further the racial divide in America.”
Mark Alexander concluded this was likely a rare unscripted moment for this most esteemed of Hollywood’s narcissistic self-promotions, but notes: “A lot of these celebs can’t distinguish between scripts and reality. Just ask Alec Baldwin, who is still playing a lead role in some reality denial sequel. Either way, this slap was the most entertaining moment in the history of celebrity award shows.”
In Smith’s remarks after receiving his “Best Actor” Oscar trophy, he apologized to everyone – except Chris Rock. He noted the advice his mentor gave him immediately after the incident: “Denzel [Washington] said to me a few moments ago, he said, ‘At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you’.” Good advice – too late.
