Plus-Sized Lizzo Makes a Change for the Better
Ms. “I Am the Beauty Standard” is now losing weight. Is this finally the beginning of the end of body positivity’s most toxic wing?
Singer Lizzo is many things — an accomplished flutist, a pop singer, and someone who is considered a leader in the “body positivity” movement given her exceptionally overweight self.
With body positivity, there is a sliver of good and a giant slice of bad. The only good aspect of body positivity is appreciating the body God gave you. The bad aspects take that appreciation to the level of self-worship. Lizzo illustrated this perfectly in the past by saying, “I’m sorry that my perfect face & rockin’ body offends you… I can’t help that I’m God’s favorite.”
As The Daily Wire’s Brett Cooper points out: “[Lizzo] led the charge on self-love, but, understandably, people [were] worried about the example she was setting for her millions upon millions of fans because it is not self-love to lie to yourself and say that your overweight body is fit and healthy and perfect because that is objectively self-harm.”
Since May, however, Lizzo has been losing weight. She is working out and eating better, and the transformation has been obvious. And although some of her fans have labeled her a traitor to the movement, most have congratulated her and urged her to continue her health journey.
However acerbically Lizzo asserts that she loves herself either way, this change is for the better for her and for all who look up to her as a role model. Which leads to the larger conversation that is really beginning to take a more prominent role in our culture and politics: the obesity epidemic.
What has caused the obesity epidemic? There are several things. For starters, our modern world lends itself to a more sedentary lifestyle. However, there are plenty of adults and children who lead active lives and still struggle to manage their weight. The culprit: our food, which is slowly poisoning us.
Listen to this passionate speech given by celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels to Congress on this very subject:

Big Farming, Big Pharma, Big Food, and Big Insurance have made it so that we, the American people, are trapped eating terrible food, and the governing agencies that oversee these industries are corrupt. The food pyramid is absolutely wrong and has been for years. How many of us have health issues today that could be resolved via better food? Probably most of us. Perhaps Elon Musk or RFK Jr. can look into these government entities should Donald Trump win in November.
Obesity touches everything. It drives up healthcare and insurance costs. It’s a huge reason why many young people simply aren’t qualified to join the military, which in turn affects our readiness should the U.S. be pushed into armed conflict. Obesity also affects the working class. When unhealthy foods are put into our bodies, they not only add to our weight but fog up our mental acuity. Consequently, production and camaraderie can suffer.
On the bright side, obesity seems to be a common touch point for mothers across the nation left, right, and center. They are rallying behind the "Make America Healthy Again” slogan. With even Lizzo seeming to accept reality in this regard, perhaps the toxicity of this particular subject can be mended.
