Chicago Teachers Union President Is in the 5% of the ‘Class’
Karen Lewis may not be a household name, but maybe she should be the poster woman for hypocrisy. The Chicago Teachers Union president has regularly made an issue out of income inequality, fomenting class war among teachers and others. She calls the Windy City’s chief executive, Rahm Emanuel, “Mayor 1%” and a “tool of corporate Chicago.” By contrast, she is “not egotistical or rich.” It’s true, she’s not a millionaire, but she’s not exactly a poor teacher, either. Lewis reportedly makes more than $200,000 per year (more than Emanuel, by the way) and owns multiple homes, including a condo in Hawaii. Never mind that, she says, “I don’t live extravagantly. … I have always been solidly middle class.” She does concede, “But if you look just at the numbers, then, absolutely, I am in the 5%.” It’s true she doesn’t compare to many corporate executives, but to the average American earning $40,000 a year, she should be more careful with her heated class rhetoric.
